With temperature highs expected to reach triple digits throughout the week, the Los Angeles County Health Officer has declared a heat alert for the San Gabriel Valley from now through September 1. During this period, measures should be taken to protect those that are vulnerable to the heat, including older adults, infants and children.

Children, elderly people or pets should not be left unattended in homes without air conditioning, and pets or kids should never be left in enclosed vehicles unattended.

If you do not have access to air conditioning, please visit the city’s cooling centers, which are the Asian Youth Center (located at 100 Clary Avenue) and the San Gabriel Library (located at 500 South Del Mar Avenue). You may also call 2-1-1 or visit this link for a list of cooling centers across Los Angeles County.

In addition, since energy usage is expected to be high during this period of extreme heat, residents are encouraged to conserve energy whenever possible. Our friends at Edison have tips on how to maximize your air conditioner’s efficiency, and SoCalGas recommends turning off all unnecessary lights and postponing the use of major appliances until after 9:00 p.m.

Be sure to also limit strenuous outdoor activities, and stay hydrated whenever possible.
