Although no cases have been reported within San Gabriel yet, nearby cities such as Arcadia, Pasadena, Monrovia, Glendale and more have had confirmed cases of rabid bats. In 2016, Los Angeles County reported 38 total bats that tested positive for rabies; to view the detailed cases, visit: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/vet/rabiesmap2016.htm. Multiple cases have been reported in 2017, and the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society just handled a case in Rosemead.
Bat activity increases in the summer and fall, so it is expected that more of these cases will occur as temperatures get warmer. Residents are advised to never touch a bat with bare hands and to keep their pet rabies vaccinations up-to-date.
