[ARCHIVED] Great Streets update

2016 Great Streets

“Great Streets” is San Gabriel’s ongoing, annual program to restore and preserve the City’s 80-mile long street network. Great Streets includes two types of work: pavement maintenance which extends the life of pavement by making minor surface repairs and/or providing a preservative sealcoat surface to streets that are in relatively good structural condition, and pavement rehabilitation that restores and strengthens roads in poor condition and typically involves grinding down old pavement and installing a thick layer of asphalt concrete or, when necessary, complete removal and reconstruction of the asphalt concrete and base or subgrade layers.

The rains have slowed the progress of the 2016 Great Streets Program now underway. Pavement reconstruction is now almost complete on Bradbury Drive north of Las Tunas and Charlotte Avenue between Mission Road and Grand Avenue. Several street segments, including portions of Roses Road, Del Mar Avenue and Broadway have been “crack sealed.” This will prevent water from entering the cracks, weakening the roadway and leading to potholes. Some of these streets will also soon be “slurry sealed” which adds an additional layer to the wearing surface and extends the street life by 7 to 10 years.

While the 2016 Great Streets project is nearing completion, Public Works Engineering staff are busy preparing a list of streets to recommend to City Council for repairs in the 2017 Great Streets Project later this year.

Another significant improvement to the City’s streets is also about to begin: the restoration of the “haul routes” used during the San Gabriel Trench Project. With the monumental railroad project nearing completion, Alameda Corridor East (ACE) is now preparing to rebuild and resurface the nearly four miles of streets used by thousands of heavy trucks over the last few years. These include Del Mar Avenue (from Mission Road to Clary), Mission Road (from the Union Pacific Railroad to San Gabriel Blvd.), San Gabriel Blvd. (from Interstate 10 to Agostino), and Grand Avenue (from San Gabriel Blvd. to the Rubio Wash).
