This winter, Public Works crews installed capture devices on all city-owned catch basins to prevent trash and debris from entering the flood control system.

Connector Pipe Screens (CPS) inside the catch basin prevent large trash or debris larger than 5 mm, such as cups or paper, from entering the connector pipe and traveling to the Pacific Ocean. 

The installation of the units is a critical step to ensure the city's compliance with the regulations set forth by the Los Angeles River Trash Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), as part of guidelines by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).

From November through January, crews installed 58 units on city-owned catch basins. The second phase, installation of screens on 477 Los Angeles County owned basins within the city's jurisdiction will begin later this year.
