On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the City of San Gabriel will participate in the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count.

This is the second time the city has participated in the event, which aims to gather important data on the homeless population in the greater Los Angeles region to ultimately bring community resources and engage local leaders to help end homelessness. The count is coordinated through the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), a joint powers authority of the City and County of Los Angeles formed in 1993 to address homelessness in Los Angeles. It is the largest homeless census count in the nation.

To participate in the count, the city will provide key staff resources, but volunteers are also an important part of the event. LAHSA needs at least 2,000 volunteers to help make the overall count a success, and some of those volunteers will be sent to San Gabriel. Interested volunteers can apply online at www.theycountwillyou.org/volunteer.

The count will take place on the night of Jan. 24, when volunteers will be out from 8 p.m. to midnight making a visual tally of homeless people living on the streets. Volunteers will be trained before going out, and will receive a shirt and a certificate of appreciation after the count is complete.
