[ARCHIVED] Celebrate Active Aging Week Sept. 26-30

active aging week

The City of San Gabriel will celebrate Active Aging Week Sept. 26-30 with special programs and activities for older adults.

Active Aging Week, organized by the International Council on Active Aging®, is a national observance that showcases the diverse opportunities available to older adults in a fun and educational atmosphere. This year’s theme is “Explore the Possibilities.”

At the Community Services Department, there will be a number of activities throughout the week to help local older adults exercise their mind and body. Activities include daily brain games, ultrasound screenings for leg pain from SonoHealthcare Solutions, a presentation on mental health from Pacific Clinics and much more. All activities will take place at the Adult Recreation Center, 324 S Mission Drive and will start after the senior lunch program at about 12:30 p.m.

During Active Aging Week older adults will also have an opportunity to sample some classes that are offered by the Community Services Department for free, including chair yoga, beginning ballroom dance, water aerobics, tennis and introduction to computers. Classes are subject to change.

San Gabriel’s older adults can stay active by trying just one or all of the classes during the week. While the free offer is limited to one class session during Active Aging Week, participants can also enter a raffle to win free entry into a class for the remainder of the session. During Active Aging Week all participants attending a free class must register and complete a waiver form for the class before attending.

To register for a class or for more information on older adult programs, contact Recreation Supervisor James Lara at 626.308.2875 or jlara@sgch.org.

Any person with a disability who requires a modification or accommodation in order to participate should direct such request to the Community Services Department at 626.308.2875 at least 48 hours before the event, if possible.
