[ARCHIVED] City breaks ground on Del Mar paving project

del mar groundbreaking

The city hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Monday to launch the first phase of the long-awaited Del Mar Avenue Pavement Rehabilitation Project.

The first phase of the project will include pavement reconstruction of 0.5 miles of Del Mar Avenue from Mission Road to Chestnut Avenue and is scheduled for completion by fall 2016. It will cost approximately $800,000. There will not be any full closures for this project, but construction may impact traffic intermittently. The city will post traffic updates on the website and social media throughout the project.

Del Mar Avenue is one of the city’s busiest arterials and has some of the most deteriorated pavement in the city. Over the next two years, the city will resurface 1.5 miles of Del Mar Avenue from Mission Road to the 10 Freeway, dividing the work into three phases. In addition to the pavement work, this project will also include curb and gutter repairs, new accessible pedestrian ramps, bicycle lane striping and an additional $1.3 million in sewer repairs.

The entire three-phase paving project will cost a total of approximately $3.8 million. The city secured a loan in this amount from the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank to complete the project sooner, and will pay back the loan using Measure R funds.

The City Council and city staff members have made a concerted effort to prioritize infrastructure repairs in recent years, listening to concerns from residents about road conditions. Last year the city completed the Las Tunas Drive Pavement Rehabilitation Project, resurfacing a one-mile stretch of the nine-lane arterial and adding new features such as the city’s first bike lanes.

Last year the city paved 3.6 miles of roads and this year plans to pave 1.4 miles, totaling more than $2 million. In addition, following the completion of the ACE San Gabriel Trench project in 2017, ACE will pay to resurface more than 3.5 miles of roads used as haul routes during construction, including San Gabriel Boulevard and Mission Road.
