The City of San Gabriel will be hosting its annual Lunar New Year event in partnership with KAZN, KMRB and Sino TV on Saturday, February 4, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Mission District.
As we welcome the Year of the Rabbit, the event will feature many Lunar New Year activities including:
- Opening ceremony with a lion dance and a dragon dance (9:50 am to 10:50 am)
- Complimentary guided walking tours of the Mission District from noon to 3 p.m., with two special tours led by Mayor Tony Ding
- A full day of cultural music and dance performances by various schools in the San Gabriel Valley
- 80+ food and artisanal booths
- A kids' zone
Community members can peruse nearly 80 food and artisanal booths, learn about Lunar New Year from various community and cultural organizations; as well as enjoy a petting zoo and pony rides in the kid’s zone.
There will also be free 30-minute guided walking tours from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. to learn about San Gabriel and the Mission District’s historical significance. During the tour, attendees can explore and learn about the Mission San Gabriel Archangel, San Gabriel City Hall, Ramona Museum of California History, Old Grapevine, Mission Playhouse, Old City Hall Site, Salcido Store and the Hayes House. Two special tours will be held at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., with Mayor Tony Ding sharing his personal insights about the eight historic landmarks of the Mission District.
In addition, community members are invited to create a joint community art piece – A Rainbow of Peace Cranes – in recognition of the Monterey Park tragedy and its impact on cities in the San Gabriel Valley. Located next to the Mission Playhouse fountain, members can write down their thoughts, reflections and messages on origami paper; carefully fold them into beautiful cranes; and help fill a giant shadow box full of colorful well-wishing cranes. Once completed and filled with their messages of love and hope, the community art piece will be delivered to the City of Monterey Park.
Parking Areas
Parking will be available at the San Gabriel Valley Medical Plaza and Park & Ride parking lots.
