With the replacement of 30 traffic control cabinets, intersections throughout San Gabriel are also being installed with a new traffic signal timing feature called a “leading pedestrian interval”(LPI).
Pedestrians are given a four-second head start before vehicles are given the green light. This positions the pedestrian within the crosswalk area before cars can make the turn and improves the visibility of crossing pedestrians, making it safer for them to cross the street.
As of today, 15 out of the 30 cabinets have been replaced along with LPI installed by our Public Works staff. These new state-of-the-art traffic signal cabinets are just one of the many projects that will improve traffic flow, but also to eliminate traffic injuries.
