Dear San Gabriel,

As you might have heard, our community experienced several pedestrian tragedies in recent weeks. We’ve taken the time to listen to your concerns, and I wanted to outline how we’re addressing pedestrian safety.

First, our team at Public Works and Police are thoroughly investigating every intersection in the City with a focus on safety for both pedestrians and drivers. This process may involve adding reflectors, flashing lights, signage and other improvements. In other portions of the City, we will be removing crosswalks with a focus on encouraging pedestrians to walk to the nearest intersection with a traffic signal or stop sign to promote the safest crossing possible.

Second, we’re taking input from the community for crosswalk improvements with the goal of incorporating this feedback for future projects. We plan to budget for these improvements as soon as we can, and we’ll communicate these changes once we make them.

Third, we’ll be embarking on a far-reaching safety campaign in the coming weeks to spread awareness about pedestrian and vehicle safety. Keep a look out as we develop this campaign across all our communication platforms.

The safety of our community remains our top priority, and our team is working hard to improve safety in the City.
