Mission Playhouse
Home to the Legendary Mission Play
Artist's rendering of the San Gabriel Mission Theater
This drawing of the historic San Gabriel Mission Theater appears to be from the 1940s.
Constructed in 1927 to house John Steven McGroarty’s epic Mission Play (charting the establishment of the California missions), the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse is a beautiful Spanish-style building steeped in history that has been home to thousands of music, theatre, and dance performances.

An Ideal Venue for Performance
Located in the historic Mission District of San Gabriel, the playhouse provides a home for many local and international performing-arts groups who produce and present a huge range of cultural experiences from mariachi to hip-hop, from Shakespeare to Broadway, and classical ballet to folk dance.

A Great Location for Conferences, Graduations & Movie Shoots
With its beautiful interior and modern facilities, the Mission Playhouse is the perfect venue for dance, music, and theater performances or for high school graduations, public meetings, and film shoots. Over the years, the playhouse has provided the location for major commercials, TV shows, and Hollywood movies.
