YOUTH PROGRAMS

After School/Playground Program:
The after school recreation and sports program is designed to offer a well-rounded leisure program for public school youth in the 4th and 5th grades. The program will be run at each of San Gabriel's public elementary schools from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., or until dark, Tuesday thru Friday. Each playground (Coolidge, Dewey, Marshall, McKinley, Roosevelt, Washington and Wilson Elementary Schools) will have a male and female leader each day that will provide a traditional sports program for participants. The sports program is designed to teach the fundamentals of sports and instill a sense of pride and sportsmanship in our youth.
The after school recreation program is not day care. Children are encouraged by staff to remain on the playground, but they are free to come and go at any time. Staff is not responsible for children who choose to leave the playground. All participants must have a parent or guardian complete and sign a Participant Information Form and return it to their Recreation Leader. Parents are encouraged to stop by and meet the Recreation Leaders. All recreation programs close at the time listed above, which concludes the Recreation Department’s supervision of participants. Recreation Leaders are instructed to leave the facility at that time.
Participants play on teams representing their school. Boys participate in flag football and girls participate in volleytennis, a fast paced and exciting form of volleyball. Games are scheduled for Saturday mornings. Both flag football and volleytennis will be played at Washington School. Game schedules will be distributed to participants. Parents are encouraged to attend these games on Saturday mornings at Washington School playground and tennis courts. At the conclusion of the sports season, 1st and 2nd place teams are awarded trophies and the first place school receives a perpetual trophy. The most outstanding flag football players are invited to participate on the recreation department's All-Star Team and represent the City of San Gabriel in the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Athletic Association Flag Football Tournament at the season's end.f
Jefferson Middle (6th - 8th Grades) School Program:
The Jefferson sports program is a high school preparatory program. The program operates Monday thru Friday, after school from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., or until dark. Participants try out for the combined sixth/seventh and eighth grade teams, and the selected team members will represent Jefferson Middle School in the Foothill Sports League. Each team will have its own schedule for games. Game schedules will be distributed to the participants prior to the start of the season. All Jefferson students are encouraged to visit the Recreation Leaders after school to get information regarding how to participate in this exciting program.
