The City of San Gabriel is located approximately 10 miles northeast of Los Angeles at an elevation of 430 feet. The city is a general law city with a Council/Manager form of government. The assessed valuation of the city is in excess of $1.7 billion and approximately 42,000 people live within its 4.09 square miles. The climate is the normal Southern California climate with an average high of 70 degrees and a low of 49. The city is predominantly residential/commercial with some light to medium industrial.
There are 36 people total in the department. In addition to the Fire Chief there are 3 shift Battalion Chiefs, 6 Captains (2 paramedic), 6 Engineers (1 paramedic) and 18 Firefighters, 12 of whom are paramedics. We also have 1 Deputy Fire Marshal and 1 non-safety Executive Secretary.
San Gabriel has two fire stations. Administration and Prevention are at Station 51. The San Gabriel Fire Department has one shift commander who holds the rank of Battalion Chief for each of the three shifts.
The department has two engine companies. Engine 51 is a BLS engine with a minimum 3-man crew; E 52 is a paramedic assessment engine with a minimum crew of 3 people, at least one of whom is a paramedic. Both engine companies have basic ventilation equipment and hydraulic rescue tools and can function as truck company on a limited basis.
