San Gabriel sees itself as a lighthouse community where the beams of light cast by its strong educational system become a draw that guides residents and businesses to San Gabriel because of the quality education available. Excellent public educational opportunities are available to all San Gabriel residents at all grade levels. San Gabriel's schools consistently rank well above state and national averages, are recognized as California Distinguished Schools, and are actively supported by parents and the local community.

The city's primary and secondary schools are served by the San Gabriel Unified and Garvey Unified School Districts. The San Gabriel Unified School District operates five elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools while the Garvey Unified School District operates two elementary schools that serve the southern neighborhoods of the city. School facilities have been greatly enhanced by the recent completion of several key capital improvement projects with more construction currently underway.
