ACE San Gabriel Trench Project


Project Description:

The 2.2-mile San Gabriel Trench grade separation project will result in the lowering of a 1.4-mile section of Union Pacific railroad track in a trench through the City of San Gabriel.

Project Status:

  • Construction began in late 2012 and will continue through 2017.
  • All four bridges have now been completed and now work is underway to construct the trench. By early 2017, the Union Pacific Railroad train tracks will be installed in the trench and the temporary tracks on street level will be removed. Finally, aesthetic work on the bridges will be completed by the end of 2017.

Project Features:

  • New bridges at Ramona, Mission Road, Del Mar Avenue and San Gabriel Boulevard allowing vehicles and pedestrians to pass over the tracks.
  • Rail lines return to grade between San Gabriel Boulevard and Walnut Grove Avenue.
  • Rail crossing at Walnut Grove Avenue to remain at-grade but may require a shallow lowering of the roadway to match proposed railroad grade.
  • Storm and sewer improvements 
  • Enhanced Mission District landscaping and architectural bridge treatments
  • Relocation of historic Mill Race 
  • Resurfacing of 3.5 miles of street pavement used during construction, including Mission Road and San Gabriel Blvd.
