This year, the City of San Gabriel launched an effort to review and update the city's 50-year-old Historic Preservation Ordinance. The city hired consultants Chattel Inc. and SWCA Inc. to draft an ordinance that would give the city greater tools and procedures to protect and preserve the city's historic structures and resources. Along the way, the city will welcome input from the community at several public meetings. The final ordinance will go before the City Council for approval in the fall.
The ordinance update is also tied to a moratorium approved by the City Council prohibiting single family home demolitions and second story additions in the R-1 zone. This moratorium will expire in October 2016.
