Historic Preservation and Cultural Resource Ordinance Update

In 2016, the City of San Gabriel launched an effort to review and update the city's 50-year-old Historic Preservation and Cultural Resource Ordinance. The city hired consultants Chattel Inc. and SWCA Inc. to draft an ordinance that would give the city greater tools and procedures to protect and preserve the city's historic structures and resources. Along the way, the city will welcome input from the community at several public meetings. The final ordinance will go before the City Council for approval in 2017.

In October 2016, the City Council voted to extend a moratorium on single family home demolitions in the R-1 zone. The previous moratorium prohibited second story additions, however, the Council chose not to include this prohibition in the extended moratorium. This moratorium will expire in October 2017.

Community members can look at this page for updated information and helpful resources on historic preservation. For more information or questions on the ordinance update, contact Senior Planner Larissa De La Cruz at 626.308.2800, ext. 4625 or ldelacruz@sgch.org.
